NOTE: The document you are reading right now is an information page telling you all about what is available on the download page and general hints on how to make this page work best for you. It gives general instructions on how to use what you find here, so read on!!
The page is broken down into two specific areas. They are:
1. WorldWrite Demo
2. Helper Applications
WorldWrite Demo
The WorldWrite Demo folder is for downloading the WorldWrite 3.0.1
Demo. This demo is save disabled.
In this folder, there are two items displayed. They are the Demo Disk and the WorldWrite Demo Application. The Demo Disk item contains the exact contents as the disk that we hand out at MacWorld etc., and the WorldWrite demo application item contains only the save disabled application. Additional differences are that the demo disk contains sample documents, WorldWrite Help, AppleGuide, Shortcuts, and the application. This selection takes longer to download. Thus, it is recommended to download the application only on slower internet connections.
Demo Disk
Downloading the demo disk will give you a bin-hexed archive of the
demo installer. The steps for downloading this demo are as follows:
1. Click on the Demo Disk item on the WorldWrite demo page.
2. If your web browser is configured properly, you should be able to download
this file without a hitch. If you have not configured your helper applications
for your browser it may not know what to do with the bin-hexed file that
you are downloading from our server. For the sake of simplicity, choose
to save the file to the desktop if you are getting messages asking what
helper application you would like to use and where you would like to save
the application.
Depending on your connection to the internet, the download could take a
few minutes or even several minutes to receive. As noted on the download
page, the size of this item is about 1.7MB compressed. For a 28K baud modem
transferring 2.5K/sec this will take roughly 8 minutes. For modems and
connections slower than that it will take longer.
3. After the file has finished downloading, it is time to decode the bin-hexed
file. In order to do that you will need an application like Aladdin's StuffIt-Expander
or StuffIt-Lite. If you have this application, double-click on the demodisk.hqx
icon on the desktop and this will run the StuffIt-Expander to unencode
the demodisk.hqx file. The reason for encrypting the files into a bin-hexed
format is so that the files will make it to your machine and you will be
able to use them. Without this encryption, files most times will be damaged
when being transmitted over the internet. Even with encryption, it doesn't
work perfectly 100% of the time. But the odds of a successful download
and a demo that you can use are much greater.
4. After dencrypting the bin-hexed file, now you are ready to install the
disk demo. Double-click on the intaller icon and install the demo wherever
you choose on the hard drive. The demo is then ready to use.
Application Only
The information in this section is largely the same as above. Downloading
the application only will give you a bin-hexed archive of a folder containing
the WorldWrite demo application. That is really all that is in the folder.
The steps for downloading this application only are as follows:
1. Click on the Application Only item on the WorldWrite demo page.
As noted on the download
page, the size of this item is only about 1MB compressed. For a 28K baud
modem transferring 2.5K/sec this will take roughly 4 minutes. For modems
and connections slower than that it will take longer.
4. After dencrypting the bin-hexed file, now you are ready to use the Application
Only Demo. Double-click on the Demo folder icon and launch the demo. You
may place this folder wherever you choose on the hard drive and still be
able to use it.
Helper Applications
On the download page, there is a folder entitled Helper Applications.
After clicking on the folder icon or the words "Helper Applications",
you should notice four other options that appear below the folder name.
What are helper applications? Helper applications are computer programs
that help you use the internet and the things that you can download or
save from the internet. You can download the WorldWrite 3.0.1 demo from
the internet from off of this page, but for safe transmittal over the World
Wide Web from our computer to yours, the demo has been encrypted or bin
hexed (thus the hqx extension) so that it doesn't get messed up when you
try and use it after saving it to your compter. If it doesn't get encrypted
first when you download it, you may not be able to use it when you get
it to your machine.
Contents of the Helper Applications folder
The Helper Applications folder has four items in it - the Stuffit Expander
application, the Drop Stuff application, the Shrink Wrap application, and
the Stuffit Lite application.
