The ArabTrans demo
A FREE DEMO VERSION of ArabTrans can be downloaded. Just click right here to get your copy.
ArabTrans works under Microsoft Windows with Arabic support version 3.1 or later, and it accepts English files that have been created by any word processor capable of producing pure text files (i.e. *.txt).
The program shows the original English text and its Arabic translation on a split screen, with the facility to view alternative Arabic meanings of any selected word (in effect, the user has an online English-to-Arabic dictionary).
ArabTrans also lets you build your own dictionary tailored to your particular applications by allowing you to add new words to the main dictionary. The translation accuracy will be highest when English text added in this way is grammatically correct.
With ArabTrans, you can have a quick overview of the material to be translated without suffering the delay while manual translation takes place.
It is important to mention that the program cannot substitute the professional translators who normally deal with the art of translation, as the translation produced by the program requires editing for both grammatical accuracy and to check whether alternative meanings are required. Therefore, the program is a new tool to aid translation even for professional translators by providing a fast draft of the translation with high accuracy, saving time and effort.
The demo version of ArabTrans is limited in that its English dictionary only contains the words used in the sample file on sand gazelles, and you are only allowed to add up to ten new words to the dictionary. Other than that, it functions in exactly the same way as the full product.
To set up the demonstration on your PC's hard disk:
- Ensure that your PC is running Arabic Windows
- Download the demonstration version of ArabTrans
- Create a temporary directory on your hard disk called c:\temp
- Put the downloaded file arabt.zip into c:\temp
- Unzip the file
- In Program Manager, select File, Run c:\temp\setup.exe
- When the program asks for the source of the files, type c:\temp
- After setup is complete, there should be a new directory within c:\temp, inside which is a program called DMOTRNS. Click this twice from within Arabic Windows to run the demonstration.
...and that's it. Your ArabTrans demonstration should now be up and running.
The program has many icon- and menu-based commands, including:
- Open an English-language text file to be used for translation.
- Switch on/off the ability to notify the user whether a word is in the dictionary.
- Cut, copy and paste selected text.
- Search for all Arabic meanings of a selected word - the user can choose from the list of alternatives.
- Translate the English text into Arabic, either paragraph by paragraph (pausing at the end of each paragraph for the user to check the results) or in a single run from start to finish.
- Use the Edit and Review window to change the suggested Arabic translation.
- Search for English words with multiple Arabic meanings.
A sample document, demo.txt, is included in the demo package.
