Reading Japanese
This
25-lesson course is designed to introduce non-Japanese learners to written
Japanese. The Japanese material incorpo-rated in the text includes samples
of both printing and handwriting and of horizontal English-style format
as well as the tradi-tional, vertical style of writing.
Japanese is normally written with a mix-ture of two systems, kana and Chinese characters. The first 8 lessons introduce kana writing while each of the remaining lessons introduce 25 new Chinese characters (kanzi).
The terminology, romanization, and special symbols used in the Begining Japanese courses are retained in the reader. Its text emphasizes reading in context- from phrases and sentences to narratives, letters, and conversations. The audio cassettes provide spoken transcriptions in Japanese of the printed exercises and are essential to achieving mastery of the material.
