Reading Modern Written Arabic (FSI)

Though there is considerable diversity of dialects in spoken Arabic, the written language is fairly standard with the differences falling into historical periods rather than geographical areas. The emphasis in this course is on reading modern printed Arabic. However, before attempting this course, it is necessary to know the Arabic writing system and have reasonably accurate pronunciation.

The audio cassettes provide spoken transcriptions in Arabic of the printed exercises and are essential to achieving mastery of the material. You begin by reading simple exercises, then newspaper articles which range from easy to more difficult levels, and finally, books and periodicals in selected subjects. Volume II provides more advanced exercises focusing on reading the modern Arabic press.

Modern Written Arabic, Vol. I: 18 cassettes (30 hr.) and 419p. text.
Modern Written Arabic, Vol. II: 8 cassettes (8 hr.) and 385p. text.
