For those who wish to learn to read and write Chinese ideographs, Read Chinese teaches a total of 600 characters and assumes a knowledge of the vocabulary of the first half of Speak Mandarin.
Book I introduces 300 characters and includes writing and stroke-order charts. Book 11 contains an additional 300 characters within the framework of a journey to Beijing. Both full and simplified characters are used. The audio cassettes that accom-pany this course provide spoken transcrip-tions in Mandarin of the printed exercises and are essential to mastery of the mater-ial. This course was developed by Fred Fang-yu Wang for the Read Chinese "Mirror" Series, Yale University.
