Mandarin
Mandarin, the official language of China, is spoken by approximately 800 million people. This classic course presents the basic structure patterns of colloquial Mandarin using a vocabulary that would be heard in everyday Chinese conversations. Since the Yale romanization is used throughout the text, you are not required to learn Chinese characters; attention is concentrated on new sounds, words, and language patterns. This is the same way Chinese children are taught the language-speaking first, writ-ing later. De.veloped by H.C. Fenn and M.G. Tewksbury of Yale University, the course has gone through several revisions incor-porating many suggestions from students who have already taken the course.
The Speak Mandarin course is pre-sented in 20 lessons, each containing a dialog (or narrative), vocabulary, sentence patterns, notes, and a translation of the introductory dialog.
