Cherokee is an Iroquoian language spoken by some ten thousand people living in Northeastern Oklahoma, and by another thousand or so living in western North Carolina. The syllabary which Sequoyah devised for Cherokee in the twelve years before 1821 is still considered one of the most impressive works of linguistic analysis and invention, and has remained in use to this day. The 85character syllabary differs from an alphabetic system in that it symbolizes each syllable, rather than each sound, in the language.
