Hello Russia 2.0. is an English to Russian multimedia phrase book and more. This is a great product for practicing and learning conversational Russian. It runs on an MS-Windows 3.1 Multimedia PC with a CD-ROM drive and sound card. Upon starting Hello Russia, there will first appear the opening screen in which music is played and a mosaic of pictures of Russian scenes and culture is constructed. The main intent of Hello Russia is to give the use practice in conversational Russian. In the main screen, you may select between phrases, dialogs and dictionary words. You click on English text and hear Russian speech at normal or slow speed (all speech is by native Russian speakers). The Russian text is displayed in Cyrillic and optionally also in transliteration. There are 715 English-Russian phrases in 28 categories which are introduced by humorous animation clips. The phrase categories include simple grammar, alphabet, at the hotel, business phrases etc. ..much like you would find in a conventional paper phrase Each category of phrase or dialog contains an introduction with information on contemporary Russian life, frequently with color pictures of scenes from Russia.
There are 11 categories of dialogs in Hello Russia. The dialogs cover realistic situations, such as buying at the store. Dialogs (and also phrases and words) can be played one at a time or in automatic mode, all phrases in a dialog will be played sequentially. There is an Audio-Visual (talking) English to Russian dictionary with 3247 words. Click on English word and hear the Russian word spoken at either normal or slow speed. Note the emphasis in Hello Russia is on useful phrases. This is a great product for practicing listening to and speaking Russian. A supplementary text (not provided) is recommended for learning grammar. In addition to providing practice in conversational Russian, Hello Russia contains significant tourist and cultural information. The Interactive Map of Russia contains information on principal cities. Click on a city and see pictures and read information. There is an Interactive Moscow Metro Map. Click on a station and hear its name. For stations inside the Circular Line, there will be pictures of the station and textual information. The Mosaic contains pictures and information on Russian history and culture. There are 36 pictures. Click on a picture, hear the name and read brief textual information. In the Music Box, famous Russian musical pieces are played in instrumental MIDI. There are about 10 scores that play indefinitely. You can play background music when you are done practicing Russian. With the Hello Russia CD-ROM, you will be able to record and play back your voice and compare your pronunciation with that of a native speaker. Hello Russia is easy to set up and use. Just run SETUP to install a Windows program group. The user interface is straightforward and intuitive. It should not be necessary to read any documentation. (There are instructions in the booklet and in the on-line help.) Hello Russia 2.0 makes use of 500 MB on the CD and there are about 4 hours of native Russian speech.
