HOW SYST RAN WORKS

SYSTRAN makes the most of a human translator's valuable time by taking over the timeconsuming and tedious task of generating rough translations. Translator's skills are used to edit and polish the text stylistically, resulting in higher quality finished text and greatly increased productivity.

SYSTRAN MODULER COMPONENTS

Begin by selecting the text input procedure most convenient for you keyboard entry, diskette, optical scanner, magnetic tape, modem or interface with word processors. After that, SYSTRAN'S modular component system takes over.

CONTROL SOFTWARE

The control software receives the source text, accesses the appropriate dictionaries, controls the translation process, and prepares the translated text for the user.

LINGUISTIC PROGRAMS

The Linguistic Programs consist of three modules:

ANALYSIS: Source Language Analysis produces a complete parsing of source sentences. The analyzed text can be used for translation into any target language. Translation is done sentence by sentence with some ability to refer to information in the preceding text.

TRANSFER: Transfer Module performs a further analysis of the source text specifically for the selected target language.

SYNTHESIS: Target Language Synthesis creates the target translation. Synthesis programs are specific only to the target language, and will work with any source language analysis.

DICTIONARIES

STEM DICTIONARIES are largely singleword entries with morphological, syntactic and semantic information attached.

LS DICTIONARIES contain a set of contextual rules that handle fixed phrases such as idiomatic expressions, whose meaning cannot be obtained by simply adding the meaning of all elements. Each of the sub dictionaries can also be further categorized in terms of the subject matter. There are currently 20 technical glossaries to choose from.

CUSTOMER SPECIFIC DICTIONARIES allow the customer to maintain a buffer of 4000 new entries. Once the buffer is filled up, the new entries may be added to the main SYSTAN dictionary to allow an additional 4000 entries to be entered

PERIODIC UPDATES

SYSTRAN has the largest dictionaries of any MT company. Most operational language pairs have about 100,000 entries. (500,000 in our Russian to English system)
