Natural Language Translation for UNIX: DP/Translator
Intergraph's DP/Translator software automatically translates documents into several languages. Dictionaries you create supplement the basic vocabulary of each language with specialized terminology. This feature, combined with the speed of automation, makes DP/Translator especially suitable for lengthy technical documents. A member of Intergraph's family of publishing products, DP/Translator fits into a variety of translation and publishing workflows. The product runs on Intergraph's RISC workstations and with Intergraph's versatile networking capabilities, can be teamed with most word processing and publishing applications in many other computing environments.

Multiple language modules
DP/Translator is available in eight language modules, all of which can be operated on a single Intergraph RISC workstation. DP/Translator modules include:
Flexibility through integration
DP/Translator's ability to fit easily into different publishing and translation workflows underscores Intergraph's commitment to meet industry standards. Accepting documents for translation from a variety of sources, DP/Translator provides tools to preserve document style in translation. This capability enables DP/Translator to work either within an Intergraph publishing environment or as a single product accepting document files from a variety of word processors and publishing applications.
Intergraph environment. Your Intergraph workflow may include both documents and computer-aided designs. When teamed with Intergraph's electronic publishing applications, DP/Translator produces translated documents to match the styling of the originals. Headings, paragraphs, numbered steps, graphic placements, columns, footnotes, cross references, and all other document elements remain intact. Also, DP/Translator translates text on engineering drawings and maps in Intergraph's I/EMS and IGDS formats. DP/Translator extracts the text from the design file, translates it, then places the translated text on a separate layer in the design file. With this capability, designers can select a layer with the appropriate language whenever they display or output a copy. Intergraph's Custom Publishing Solutions automate the publication of text and images stored in data-bases. With DP/Translator added to a custom publishing workflow, you can expand database publishing to include multilingual documents.
Other environments. For maximum flexibility within a wide range of document processing environments, DP/Translator offers several options for achieving compatibility with most word processing and publishing applications.
Documents in ASCII format. DP/Translator accepts ASCII files for translation and outputs translated files in ASCII format. You might choose this option if you were translating for information only and were unconcerned about the format of the translated document.
Documents in tagged ASCII format. DP/Translator accepts several types of tagged ASCII documents for translation, providing filters and basic conversion tables for SGML, Microsoft Word RTF format, QuarkXPress Xpress Tag format, FrameMaker MIF format, and troff. Because the ASCII tags are maintained in the translation, styling features such as paragraphs, columns, and headings are restored when you return a translated document to the application where the original was created. For more flexibility, DP/Translator lets you define tags and build new conversion tables for translating tagged ASCII documents from other systems.
Documents in "native" formats. DP/Translator provides tools for building tables to convert binary or non-ASCII document types for translation and to restore the original styling after translation. The conversion tables for WordPerfect document files are also included.
Speed and convenience
Automation. Automatic translation can substantially increase your productivity. You simply initiate the translation and then go on to other work while DP/Translator creates a draft translation in background mode. Or you can queue the translation for batch processing during off-peak hours. DP/Translator relieves you of time-consuming tasks, including repeatedly looking up words in a dictionary, repetitious translation, and typing.
Easy-to-use graphic interface. You complete the major tasks of translation by way of a user-friendly interface. You initiate translation from the File Translation menu, selecting a document file to translate, an appropriate sequence of up to six prioritized dictionaries, and then background mode or batch queuing for the automatic translation process.
Building and modifying dictionaries. Because dictionaries play a crucial role in translation, DP/Translator offers many conveniences for dictionary building and maintenance.
Accuracy and consistency
Language analysis. Automatic translation with DP/Translator is much more accurate than simple word-for-word substitution. DP/Translator conducts a language analysis, then reassembles the translated elements in the syntax of the new language.
User-created dictionaries. You can tailor your dictionaries to specific subject matter, leading to a high degree of translation accuracy and consistency. To supplement the basic dictionary included with each language version of DP/Translator, you can create additional dictionaries with words and phrases defined as required for specific documents or groups of related documents.
Dictionary sequences contribute to translation accuracy. The dictionary at the top of a sequence contains words most immediately relevant to the subject matter. As many as six dictionaries can be "stacked" and One of DP/Translator's many tools for building dictionaries, the Immediate Translation windows allow you to translate test samples and see the results immediately. used to translate any number of documents. During automatic translation, the top dictionary is consulted first. If the required word or phrase is not found there, the next dictionary in the sequence is consulted, and so on down to the basic dictionary at the bottom of the stack. Dictionary sequences solve problems caused by terms having more than one translation. When you translate a document, you determine which translation will be selected by the order of the dictionary sequence.
Consistency. Consistent use of terminology can be difficult to maintain when a translation project extends over several months or documents or when several translators work on one large project. With DP/Translator, you can assure translation consistency by using the same dictionary or dictionary sequence throughout the entire translation project.
Improve translation quality
DP/Translator does the major part of translation automatically, leaving you free to use your editing skills to polish documents until they match the standards of accuracy and clarity that you and your customers expect.
